The Chekara Orchestra of Tetouan draws together the music of both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar, so near yet so far: Morocco and Andalucía. Founded in 1958 by Abdessadak Chekara, the Moroccan violinist and singer, it was born with the idea of conjoining Flamenco and the music of Al-Andalus, which flow together not so much in fusion but rather in a rich dialogue of multiculturality and diversity. The orchestra is now run by the founder’s nephew, Jallal.
Over the years, the orchestra has played with some of Flamenco’s most important singers and guitarists. The four young Flamenco artists collaborating in their latest show are Alicia Acuña, Vicente Gelo, Raúl Cantizano and Ángeles Gabaldón, which infuses a youthful touch to a music that is ageless.
