Kroke, which means Cracow in Yiddish, is a Polish group that got started in 1992. Tomasz Lato (base), Tomasz Kurkuba (viola) and Jerzy Bawol (accordion) – Thomasz Grochot (percussion) joined them in 2003- are old school friends who graduated from the Cracow Music Academy. Perhaps better known as a Klezmer band, Kroke also play their own original compositions using authentic ornamentation, styles and scales not only of Klezmer music but also Sephardic. The result is a sound that is at once contemporary and distinctly Jewish. Beginning with traditional material, they have constructed their own arrangements and improvisations, taking their experience with Jazz and Classical music.
Their appearance at important festivals through Europe, such as the Womad in Las Palmas (Spain), Reading (UK) and the Roskilde Contemporary Folk Music (Denmark). They have shared the stage with the likes of Van Morrison, Ravi Shankar, Klezmatics and Natacha Atlas, among others, and collaborated recently with violinist Nigel Kennedy on his album East Meets West. Their fans include Ben Kingsley, Kate Capshaw and Steven Spielberg.
