———-

Soprano, composer and orchestra director, Pilar Jurado is one of the most singular stars of Europe’s classical music scene. Personalities such as Giuseppe Sinopoli, Harry Halbreich and Brian Ferneyhough have called her their muse in the creation of their contemporary creations.

A very young Pilar Jurado came to the attention of the world in 1992 at the opening of ‘Antigua Fe’ by Luis de Pablo, where she was the soloist, singing with The Richard Cooke Singers male choir and the Symphony Orchestra of Madrid under Luca Pfaff. Critics and public alike raved about her. Months later, she appeared in the Baroque Opera Wind with the Limoges Baroque Orchestra under Christophe Coin, which elicited excellent international reviews, including the following from Le Monde: “…soprano Pilar Jurado was outstanding: the beauty of her voice, the precision of her coloratura, the quality of her vibrato, her stage presence…” Such enthusiasm led to her first recording.

Her debut at the Teatro Real in Madrid with Manuel de Falla’s ‘La Vida Breve’, with which the theatre was re-inaugurated after renovation, brought her to sing at another five operas at the same theatre that season. A year later, she was at the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville and from then on she appeared at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and, later, a world tour through some of the best concert halls of Europe and the United States.

Jurado’s versatility has led her to significant experimentation with other musical styles, not only as a singer but also as a composer. One important result of this is PJ Project, where classical music is fused with contemporary and pop through electronics. This disc -difficult to pigeonhole- took her to creating a show called TransOpera, which was sponsored by BMW for over two years.

Pilar Jurado was born in Madrid and studied at the Superior Music Conservatoire there, receiving plaudits in Song, Piano, Composition, Orchestra Direction, Musicology and Musical Pedagogy. She has had counsel from such luminaries as Cotrubas, Carlo Bergonzi, Plácido Domingo, Montserrat Caballé, Teresa Berganza, Mady Mesplé, Schuyler Hamilton and especially from Isabel Penagos.
