popular initiative
The white villages of the mountains of Cadiz and Malaga have become significant tourist attractions, with Jimena de la Frontera included. That is no surprise as the village’s attractions are varied and many, containing as they do an important legacy from the past as left behind by history, with memories of ancient civilizations that settled here. hat, plus a chance to enjoy nature and tranquility of our whitewashed streets.
…….
Nevertheless, one of Jimena’s singular notes is a lot more subtle: a love for music is as much part of the scene here as red geraniums. Every nook and corner serves as a refuge for numerous artists, including musicians, painters and writers from numerous countries. For eight years now, the former have worked elbow to elbow using a universal language that knows no barriers or frontiers.
……….
Thanks to local enthusiasm as grouped in the CODA musical society, the Jimena Jazz Association and the Flamenco Club, Jimena has attracted numerous professionals from other parts of Europe, who have chosen the village to perfect their work. Their rehearsals, which become public concerts, have managed to create interesting connections between residents and musicians and, more important, they have generated an ever more demanding audience.
…….
This climate of co-operation between nationals and foreigners, as reflected in the village demographics have inspired an ambitious project: an International Music Festival.
………..
Eight editions of the Festival have been and gone, all of them born of popular initiative and local development. The Council, the village’s many societies, the area’s businesses, the volunteers – they are all vital pillars upon which rest this project.
…………
Artists of the caliber of Mª Joao Pires, Paco de Lucía, Joan Manuel Serrat, la Orquesta de la Unión Europea, Elena Riu, Alba Ventura, Solistas de Sevilla, Orquesta de L`Empordà, Estrella Morente, Vicente Amigo, Tomatito, Clara Montes, Martirio, Mariza, Javier Ruibal, Celia Mur, The Reinhardt, Sara Baras, Antonio Canales, Richard Bona, Sidy Samb, Lucrecia, Miguel Poveda, Antonio Carmona, Chucho Valdés, Orishas, Keny Garret, Dorantes, Cía. Lírica María Malibrán have shared their feelings through Classical music, through Flamenco and Jazz, Celti and Fados, Brazilian bazucadas, African rhythms and Cuban music.
……….
The Organizing Committee is the base on which the festival organization is built. On it are represented the Council, through its Mayor, the Councillors for Development and Culture, and the various musical societies of our municipality. This working team is strongly supported by more than 150 volunteers, without whom it would not be possible.
……..
The first eight years of the Festival were centered on artistic quality and diversity, in the promotion of our existence and in consolidating our Festival within the region. Having achieved those objectives, the next step is to balance our efforts to avoid wear and tear and to improve the organization.
